Lemon Useful Ingredient to Fight Cholesterol

A recent study has shown that eating Lemon Peel can be effective in lowering cholesterol. It's thought this is not just due to the pectin concentration of lemon peel, but to a variety of active ingredients in the peel.

According to scientists, flavonoids are one of the largest nutrient families. It includes over 6,000 already-identified family members. Pectin Fiber;

Pectin dietry soluble fiber, can help lower blood cholesterol levels.  Whole lemons are a good source of citrus pectin. Daily amounts of citrus pectin -- derived from grapefruit pulp and peel for 4 or 5 months can help reduce  cholesterol of 7.6 percent and an average LDL reduction of approximately 11 percent. Lemon juice without any pulp doesn’t contain much of citrus pectin, it's a little less than 1 gram per 8 ounces of juice. Better lemon with pulp.

Tips;


  • Vitamin C and various flavonoids are sensitive to oxidation and heat. Don't leave lemon juice exposed to air.
  • Don't add  it to hot teas it may destroy most of the vitamin C and flavonoids,
  • Do consume your lemon juice fresh for the best health benefits.
  • Lemon juice also makes a tasty marinade.
  • Also, always leave the pulp in lemon juice as it helps increase its pectin content and makes it more effective at reducing high cholesterol levels.
  • Lemon juice alone is sour but if you can't drink it straight sour, add it to salads, vegetables or other beverages.
